Multiculturalism in art- Livia Huang

As I know that  Joseph Churchward is of SamoanEnglishScottishTongan and Chinese heritage. First thing I want to focus on research is about Multiculturalism in art. During my research in Multiculturalism, i found an article written by Jim Supangkat, and it is about Multicultural Indonesia.

The people of Indonesia constitute a multicultural society. There are 300 ethnic groups with vastly different traditions and over 5000 dialects. Although Indonesia experience the hybridization of its culture during the 350 years it was ruled by the Dutch.

This phenomenon has caused many of the "traditional cultures" of Indonesia to become ambiguous. High  Javanese culture now known as the traditional culture of Java. Western influences entered High Javanese culture in a peaceful manner, without confrontation. And with in the hybrid culture that developed, a tradition of "high art" emerged during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

This was particularly evident in the emergence of the art of painting in Indonesia. Previously, Painting was unknow in any of the local ethnic cultures. This example raises the fundamental question of whether the occurrence of modernism in the development of indonesia art is just a continuation of the Western-influenced hybrid culture. And Modernism is the key political force in the development of art in Indonesia.
