Jay Maisel - Aaron Troy

Following on from where Jase set me off with his Hyper-Realism post, I've been looking into more photography and trying to find more contempary photographers who try to avoid digital manipulation.
I came across an artist named Jay Maisel and his portfolio blew me away.

Hot Cabbie

Hes known as being a master of colour and lighting and his career spans around 50 years so he was here long before our digital age.  I truly respect how much perfecting and thought has gone into his photos after our photography assignments.  Even working digital I find it so hard to get good in camera shots and my image design has been driving me crazy trying to get shots that can flow aesthetically when every shot is in such different lighting.

New York City Aerial

His career is also interesting.  Started off studying Design at Yale (pretty decent) then moving into photography in 1954.  He has been shooting New York the entire time and a recent book of his has photos spanning 45 years.  He is known for colour and lighting and for capturing the "gesture found in everyday life" and has been doing this for around 50 years.  He has made covers of the New York Magazine and Sports illustrated 5 times and I personally feel the perfection and energy he captures from such simple scenes cannot be flawed.

Im a little in love.

He does admit in his interview that he works digitally now and accepts all of the perks that digital brings but he still sounds like a purist at heart.

  1. Heres another artist, Kanoa zimmerman who evokes so much emotion from her photographs also. For exaple, the sense of isolation in her free diving photos is substantial.
    Heres her website http://www.kanoazimmerman.com
They almost look other worldly. Both of these photographers ability to capture and isolate such specific subject seems fictional to the eyes.
