Controversy and the New Zealand Moko - Melanie Firebrace

Jean Paul Gaultier's Fashion 2007
A piece of my paper-based research explores cultural appropriation and the koru, particularly in fashion.  It refers to Jean-Paul Gaultier's Spring/Summer 2000 line and while looking for some images I found a few interesting articles on the Gaultier's use of the moko in his 2007 collection.  They're a little off the topic of graphic design but I thought I'd post them anyway.  The issue of non-Maori appropriating traditional designs without understanding them, or giving them proper respect translates to other design disciplines:

  1. Jean-Paul Gaultier seems to be reknowned for this whether it is good or bad..

David Beckham was seen wearing a tshirt bearing the logo of anarchist punk band Crass designed by Gaultier (tshirt not logo). One of the richest celebrities in the world wearing an anarchist punk logo. I think the band don't like the fact that they don't know where the money from sales is going.
